Dog Biscuits Jar Mix Recipe
by Jane Lake at allfreecrafts My two shadows, a pair of shelties, were the taste-testers once again for this dog biscuit recipe. And, yes, once again, I tried it with them! In fact, we tried several versions until we had tweaked the ingredients to provide the best taste combination in a jar mix recipe. These cookies are more flavorful than you might suppose; the boullion granules lend a beef or chicken base, but are not overpowering, while the parmesan and garlic are well represented too. Very intriguing for my dogs -- who were sniffing the air all around the oven once they realized that the baking was for them! Free Printable Jar Label: The recipe for the dog cookies, plus the directions to bake them, are all included on the free printable jar label. Just print, cut out, and fold as you would a four fold card - in half, then in half again, so that the photo is on the front and the recipe and instructions are inside. On the back, you'll have a "To" and "From" tag for gift giving.

Layered Dog Cookie Jar Mix Ingredients:

1 cup unbleached or whole wheat flour

1 cup of oatmeal, blended into flour
½ cup cornmeal
2 tsps beef or chicken boullion granules
1 tsp garlic powder
1 cup skim milk powder
½ cup grated parmesan cheese (I used the grated parmesan that is commercially made to sprinkle on pasta)
¼ cup (approximately) of flour, or enough to fill a one quart jar

Dog Biscuits:

Directions: Preheat oven to 250° Fahrenheit. Empty jar mix into a bowl. Stir together two eggs and 1 cup of hot water and add to mix. Combine with a fork until a stiff dough forms. Add a little flour or water if dough is too sticky or too dry to work. Roll out dough on floured board to ½ inch thickness. Dip cookie cutters in flour before cutting out each cookie. A bone shaped cutter is preferred, but any shape will do. Re-roll the leftovers and cut as many cookies as possible. You can place cookies close together on a baking sheet as they will not spread while baking. Bake for about 90 minutes, or until cookies are dry and hard, turning pan around at half time to ensure even cooking. You can turn off the heat, but leave the cookies in the oven to dry out without further cooking if necessary. Dog cookies are usually baked until they are hard and crunchy. Let cool completely before storing in an airtight jar.

Dog Cookie Mix - Jar Decoration

Use a funnel to layer ingredients, in the order given, in a one quart jar, packing each layer firmly with the back of a spoon. To make the jar decoration shown, fasten a 6" circle of burlap or canvas to the jar lid with a rubber band. Tie a long tartan ribbon around the rubber band leaving both ends loose. Print the label and fold into a small card. Punch a hole in the top left corner. Thread the ribbon through the hole and knot to secure. Add the cookie cutter by circling it around the middle with first one end of the ribbon, then the other, with each end going in opposite directions so you can tie them together. Finally, form a small bow then trim the ends evenly, using a slanted cut to help prevent fraying.

It's a myth to think that most pets end up at shelters because they have behavior problems. The truth is, most pets are turned into shelters because of changes in people's lives, which means there are lots of great pets at shelters -- and lots of people who have trouble adjusting to change. Here's a top ten list of why dogs and cats end up in shelters from the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy.

Dogs
1. Moving -- Dogs can handle change, especially if their owners make the change fun. But so many people leave pets behind at shelters when they move. That's much more traumatic for dogs than riding two days in a car with their friend to a new home.

2. Landlord issues -- If you rent, then you must get approval from your landlord to have a pet. Some people lie about these things and then when the landlord finds out they have a pet, they end up getting rid of the pet rather than moving.

3. Cost of pet maintenance -- Pets are not cheap to care for. The average cost of caring for a dog is estimated at about $400 a year. That includes food, toys, vaccinations, and an annual visit to the vet. It cost a lot more if your dog gets sick or injured, has special dietary needs, or takes medication.

4. No time for pet -- That's a big excuse that rarely holds water for most shelters. What that means is that the family has gotten bored with caring for a pet.

5. Inadequate facilities -- What this means is that the person doesn't have a fenced in yard or outdoor space to house the dog. Why not bring the pet inside then? The dog was probably an indoor pet at first, but something happened, either with the dog or the dog's family, and the decision was made to put the dog outside.

6. Too many pets in the home already -- This usually is the case when dogs are not spayed or neutered. Sadly, people often take the oldest dog to the shelter because the family wants to keep the most newly acquired pet. Isn't that sad?

7. Pet illness -- All too often, people are forced to give up pets when they can't afford to pay for veterinary care for a pet's illness. I sympathize with people on this one, since there is no place for pet owners to turn right now to get help with medical expenses for their pets.

8. Personal problems -- Divorce, job loss, major injury, foreclosure on your home are many of the personal reasons people give for giving up pets. This is tough because certainly if you can't pay your own bills, it may be tough to care for a pet properly.

9. Biting -- When a dog bites, he's usually out of the house. Although I think it matters why he might have bitten someone or if the bite was a real bite or a snap. Dogs that snap are often warning people they are stepping over the line and need some training. Dogs that bite can be a problem.

10. No homes for littermates -- Many people refuse to spay or neuter their dogs and the result is a few litters a year. While the pet owner may be able to find a home for one or two of the puppies, more often than not, the remaining littermates end up at the animal shelter.

• Understand that it is simple to make your own bird food, but that you must be careful to avoid certain foods that are toxic for birds. These include caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, avocados, rhubarb, sprouted limas, fava beans and navy beans. Always check with your vet.

• Do not give peanuts to a parrot, as this could cause aspergillosis, a dangerous disease.

• Realize that each species of bird requires a different type of diet. Read about your bird's species or talk to your veterinarian so that you fully understand your bird's particular needs. Some birds require high-fat diets, while others require low-fat diets.

• Feed your bird various fruits and vegetables to see what she likes best. Consider making a tiny fruit salad or miniature green salad for your bird. Cooked vegetables and fruits are also excellent choices for a bird.

• Make sure the fruits and vegetables you feed your bird have been washed to remove all possible pesticides. Never feed your bird commercially grown strawberries, as these are sprayed with many pesticides.

• For most bird species, feed nuts and seeds sparingly (this can vary for some species).

• Limit foods that are high in fat, sugar or salt.

• Try mixing cornmeal with three whole eggs (include the shells), cooked vegetables, pieces of raw fruit and applesauce. Bake for 20 minutes. Feed this treat to your bird when cooled.

• Feed your bird some commercial pellets along with your homemade bird food.

• Birds must be fed a balanced diet; specific needs vary from species to species. Check with your avian veterinarian about what is best for your bird..

• Be sure to feed your bird some commercial pellets to ensure a complete diet and a healthy bird..

• Be certain that you never feed your bird table food that is old. Birds are very sensitive to bacteria and toxins..

• Remove eyes from potatoes before feeding them to birds. Potato eyes are poisonous..

• Raw rice is not recommended for birds..

Organ meats are not only full of vitamins for Humans but they are really healthy for dogs as well. Always make sure your pet can eat Beef... check with your vet (my disclaimer LOL)
Anyway, my dogs LOVE organ meats & beef heart is a favorite.

Someone gave me a frozen Beef heart & since I would be the only one to eat it... I figured, why not give the dogs a special treat since it's not really my favorite anyway.

I thawed it in the Microwave & cut it into smaller chunks to fit into my pressure cooker.
I added about an inch of water & threw in 1 beef boullion cube.
Pressure cooked it at 15 lbs for about 45 min.
After it cooled... I cubed it & put some in the fridge & froze some in a baggie for another time.

1 or 2 treats a day & my dogs are "loving me"!!!

A: Yes. There are several effective ways to keep dogs off the grass and out of your flower gardens. What you need to do is break the habit of the dog that is targeting your lawn. Here are some options for getting the dog (and its owner) to go somewhere else.

OPTION 1: Try putting out glass jars or clear bottles half-filled with water. Putting these containers of water on your lawn can prevent dogs from going there. Another idea is to put a sturdy dog dish of water on your lawn. The idea here is that dogs instinctively will not defecate where there is a source of drinking water. It makes sense and a lot of people swear by this method.

OPTION 2: Adjust your automatic sprinklers so that they go off when the dog wants to go. Many times owners will walk their dogs at the same time every day or night. If this is the case, water your lawn an hour or so before the dog comes around. Many dogs prefer not to defecate on wet grass.

OPTION 3: Put up a Keep Dogs Off Lawn or Please Clean Up After Your Dog sign. These signs come in many different sizes and colors. You can hang one on a fence or stick one right in the grass. These signs can be very difficult for owners to ignore and they might avoid your yard just because they know you are angry about dog poop on your yard. Top 10 Pet Poisons of 2009
With various dangers lurking in corners and cabinets, the home can be a minefield of poisons for our pets. In 2009, the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, IL, handled more than 140,000 cases of pets exposed to toxic substances, many of which included everyday household products. Don’t leave it up to Fido or Fluffy to keep themselves safe. Below is a list of the top 10 pet poisons that affected our furry friends in 2009.

Human Medications
For several years, human medications have been number one on the ASPCA’s list of common hazards, and 2009 was no exception. Last year, the ASPCA managed 45,816 calls involving prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as painkillers, cold medications, antidepressants and dietary supplements. Pets often snatch pill vials from counters and nightstands or gobble up medications accidentally dropped on the floor, so it’s essential to keep meds tucked away in hard-to-reach cabinets.

Insecticides
In our effort to battle home invasions by unwelcome pests, we often unwittingly put our furry friends at risk. In 2009, our toxicologists fielded 29,020 calls related to insecticides. One of the most common incidents involved the misuse of flea and tick products—such as applying the wrong topical treatment to the wrong species. Thus, it’s always important to talk to your pet’s veterinarian before beginning any flea and tick control program.

People Food
People food like grapes, raisins, avocado and products containing xylitol, like gum, can seriously disable our furry friends, and accounted for more than 17,453 cases in 2009. One of the worst offenders—chocolate—contains large amounts of methylxanthines, which, if ingested in significant amounts, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst, urination, hyperactivity, and in severe cases, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures.

Plants
Common houseplants were the subject of 7,858 calls to APCC in 2009. Varieties such as azalea, rhododendron, sago palm, lilies, kalanchoe and schefflera are often found in homes and can be harmful to pets. Lilies are especially toxic to cats, and can cause life-threatening kidney failure even in small amounts.

Veterinary Medications
Even though veterinary medications are intended for pets, they’re often misapplied or improperly dispensed by well-meaning pet parents. In 2009, the ASPCA managed 7,680 cases involving animal-related preparations such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, heartworm preventatives, de-wormers, antibiotics, vaccines and nutritional supplements.

Rodenticides
Last year, the ASPCA received 6,639 calls about pets who had accidentally ingested rat and mouse poisons. Many baits used to attract rodents contain inactive ingredients that are attractive to pets as well. Depending on the type of rodenticide, ingestions can lead to potentially life-threatening problems for pets including bleeding, seizures or kidney damage.

Household Cleaners
Everybody knows that household cleaning supplies can be toxic to adults and children, but few take precautions to protect their pets from common agents such as bleaches, detergents and disinfectants. Last year, the ASPCA received 4,143 calls related to household cleaners. These products, when inhaled by our furry friends, can cause serious gastrointestinal distress and irritation to the respiratory tract.

Heavy Metals
It’s not too much loud music that constitutes our next pet poison offender. Instead, it’s heavy metals such as lead, zinc and mercury, which accounted for 3,304 cases of pet poisonings in 2009. Lead is especially pernicious, and pets are exposed to it through many sources, including consumer products, paint chips, linoleum, and lead dust produced when surfaces in older homes are scraped or sanded.

Garden Products
It may keep your grass green, but certain types of fertilizer and garden products can cause problems for outdoor cats and dogs. Last year, the ASPCA fielded 2,329 calls related to fertilizer exposure, which can cause severe gastric upset and possibly gastrointestinal obstruction.

Chemical Hazards
In 2009, the ASPCA handled approximately 2,175 cases of pet exposure to chemical hazards. A category on the rise, chemical hazards—found in ethylene glycol antifreeze, paint thinner, drain cleaners and pool/spa chemicals—form a substantial danger to pets. Substances in this group can cause gastrointestinal upset, depression, respiratory difficulties and chemical burns.

Prevention is really key to avoiding accidental exposure, but if you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435 (888) 426-4435.

Puppie Parties. Day 3 The Birthday "Cake"

The "Cake" is the most exciting part of the "Paw-ty"!

Whether you make a whole "Cake" or individual "pupcakes",

These recipes will surely please all the Pups! You may want to add another cake or some dessert for the Human guests".

Serve in paper bowls, decorated in your pawty theme.

This recipe makes a real layer cake! Chicken, bacon and yogurt provide aromas that drive dogs crazy for this cake.

Bacon Chicken Layer Cake
3 cups flour
1 T. baking powder
1/2 cup margarine, softened
6 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup corn oil
2 jars strained chicken baby food
2 cups finely shredded carrots
plain or vanilla yogurt
2 or 3 strips of bacon, fried crisp, then crumbled, or use bacon-flavored jerky strips, cut into bits.

Generously grease and flour two 8" round cake pans; set aside. Combine flour and baking powder; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat softened margarine until smooth. Add eggs and corn oil; mix well. Add strained chicken, and shredded carrots and mix until smooth. Add flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Pour batter into the 2 prepared 8" cake pans.

Bake at 325° for 60 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from pans. Cool completely on wire racks. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread yogurt over top. Place second layer on top, then spread yogurt on top and sides of entire cake. Sprinkle crumbled bacon or bits of jerky strips over top. Use "Pupperoni" sticks for candles.

Naturally sweet, colorful and flavorful, this cake is simple and easy to make. Great for Fall.

Peanut Butter Carrot Cake
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Cottage Cheese as "frosting"

Mix flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into greased 8" round cake pan and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Let cool. Puree cottage cheese in blender for icing. Decorate with more peanut butter and carrots.

Pupcakes

Individual cakes for all the guests

1 large apple

1½ cups whole wheat flour

¼ cup oatmeal

2 teaspoons of baking powder

½ teaspoon of baking soda

½ cup plain yogurt

½ cup water

¼ cup vegetable oil

2 tablespoons of honey

2 eggs

1 cup grated cheese

FROSTING:

18oz lowfat cream cheese

2 tablespoons plain yogurt

2 tablespoons of honey

Preheat oven at 375 degrees Grease muffin tins.
Core, slice and mince the apple. Set aside.
In a large bowl, mix flour, oatmeal, baking powder and baking soda together.
In a medium bowl, blend the yogurt, water, oil, honey and eggs together. Then stir in the apple and cheese. Add to the flour mixture and stir until mixed. Spoon into the muffin tins, filling each cup about three quarters full.
Bake for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean.
Let rest in the muffin tins for a few minutes, then remove and set aside.
For the frosting, combine the cream cheese (at room temperature), honey and yogurt until smooth. Spread on the pupcakes. Can add Pupperonies cut in half as "candles"
Makes about 16 pupcakes.

Think of your "Pawty" as you would any other birthday party.

After you get a location (see yesterday's post) You need invitations. Get special PAW-TY party invitations for your Dog's big day.

Decorations, Pawty Favor bags, Games....

Here are some ideas to really Jazz up your Puppy Party!

To decorate outside, make a paw print trail leading to your front door, for your doggie guests to follow. When the door opens, continue the paw print trail all the way to the party room.

If the dog party theme is going to take place outside, have the paw print trail wherever you'd like them to go.

Lots of streamers and colorful balloons everywhere will add to your decor.

Follow the doggie theme party onto the table with paper plates, cups and napkins.

Remember the party hats for your "guests". Line them all up... take pictures & add the photo to some great keepsakes like watches, necklaces, belt buckles, blankets & more!

Make up some doggie party favor bags for each doggie guest to take home, including a small squeaky toy, homemade treats, dog chocs, etc.

Don't know how to make a doggie party favor bag? Let's see... How about using a large plain white or brown paper bag. Draw pictures of bones and paw prints randomly over the bag to complete your creations! Or get inexpensive dog dishes from the dollar store or Walmart & fill them with treats & small toys or balls.

GAMES:

Scavenger hunt: stuff Marrow Beef bones that you get at a pet store or your Grocery store, with cooked chicken liver & hide around the yard for the "guests" to sniff out & enjoy.

Ice cube toss: On a hot day, the dogs will appreciate this game!

Make ice cubes ahead of time by boiling down a chicken carcaus or leftover beef roast ... add little bits of the chicken or beef meat. cool broth & pour in ice cube trays. Freeze.

On party day.... toss them in the air for the dogs to jump & catch.

Hot Dog Dunk: Slice some hotdogs into a cleaned out kiddie pool filled with water. See which dog is the fastest at gobbling them down... he is the winner.

So celebrate their Birthday OR just as a "thank you" for being there.

This week I will be posting some great ideas & links to make your next Pawty a success!

First decide on when & WHERE you want to have your Puppy Party! If you live in the country & have alot of running space.... you could have your party at home. Just be sure you have the area fenced in. Even though YOUR dog may not be a "runner", your guests might.

The term "dog park" generally is used where the design of the park, and its amenities make it clear that dogs are invited, not just permitted. Most people, however, use "dog park" to mean a place dogs can play off leash.

When Choosing a Dog park for your Party.... Consider the following:

Is the park enclosed?
Some are, some are not. Some are as small as a quarter acre; some are 50 acres or much more.

Is there an entrance fee?
Sometimes. In many states "recreational use immunity" protects landowners from liability only if no fee is charged. It pays to check this out. Sometimes fees are assessed on an annual instead of a per use basis. Fees are most common with privately owned parks.

How are dog fights avoided?
Dog fights can and do occur. The most successful dog parks are the ones with an active user group. An active users group can reduce the risk of dog fights significantly. They step in and encourage or demand (as the case requires) leashes or removal of aggressive dogs.

Most dogs are not aggressive because they are not on their own territory. The dogs that use it most successfully are dogs that were socialized very young and had good experiences as they visited. Depend upon and learn from the dog savvy people to see indications of an impending squabble. Redirecting the dog's attention at exactly the right moment can make all the difference. Your tone of voice and your body language will also make a big difference. Keep calm, don't praise fearful or aggressive behavior by "soothing" the dog with petting and cooing sounds.

Are the parks privately owned or public property?
Some are public, some are private. Insurance can be a problem for private parks. Public resistance to spending taxpayer money is a problem for public parks.

What Amenities are included at the park?

Water fountains, Feces disposal stations, tables or benches for the Owners. All of these are important to check out.

Whether you live in the city or the country... keep your pets safe.

** Before letting pets out in the back yard at nite for that last "constitutional"... turn on the light to scare any critters that may be around.

** Take a "wiff" out the door to make sure your pooch doesn't scare those little "kitties" with a white stripe down the back.

** Bring in any bowls of dog food... bears LOVE dog food!

** When feeding birds or squirrels... remember ... other critters like eating THEM. So if you are attracting squirrels, you may be attracting coyotes or foxes as well.

Dogs & cats like a cool treat in the hot summer too!

#1: When I clean a chicken for dinner... I simmer the neck, liver & gizzards in plain water for about an hr. Let cool, reserve the broth, chop up the liver & gizzards, remove the neck bone... & pour broth & chopped meats in ice cube trays & freeze. Store cubes in a ziploc & MARK IT with a sharpie.

#2: plain yogurt (no sugar & organic if possible) is good for your dogs digestive system. So pour some yogurt into ice cube trays.... freeze. Store in ziplocks. Serve 1 every few days.

You pets will enjoy these cool treats on the hottest of days.

To protect your pet on the Fourth of July, take these precautions:

#1... Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.

2... Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects, even death, in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.

3... Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.

4... If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.

5... Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.

6... Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

7... Have a special pillow or lap blanket in a quiet place...

Is it okay to spoil your cat? Well, that depends on how you define “spoiling.” I call it "Pampering"

Examples of pampering tips include:

1. Bathing Wipes A Great product called OUT. They are cat-bathing wipes that have allergen reducers in them. They have a calming chamomile fragrance in them that calms excited cats. We all know that cats don't like water!!! You can warm them in your microwave for 10 seconds, prior to wiping your kitty down. The kitties don't seem to mind them very much, and kitty smells wonderful after. Sold by OUTinternational inc.# 1-800-448-8552 if you want to call.

2. A Big Comfy Chair Cats usually are the prince or princess of the house. A big comfy chair that is theirs, in front of a window. Right outside a tree with a bird bell.

3. Sing them a Song Sing your cat a song. Spoil your cats by giving them a song with each regular activity.

4. Open Windows For cats that are indoor cats .. open up a few windows (with screens of course) so that they can enjoy the fresh air. They love it.

5. Keeping their Mouths Healthy Try to keep them healthy with a little tooth brushing. They like this bedtime routine, and their dental checkups will be excellent. Use dog toothpaste (they like the poultry flavor).

6. A Little Grass Have a small back garden built for them to be taken out into every morning and evening. They like to eat grass, (good for their digestion and help them throw up hair balls, which could be dangerous if they have to pass them thru the intestines). Also plant a small tub with grass and bring it inside if they won't be going out that day. It's more difficult to maintain grass in a tub, but worth it. Rye grass grows quickly and is apparently tasty.

7. Make Do Toys Make cats toys by using boxes with holes cut out, yard bags (either uncut, or with the bottom cut open and the sack supported by a small box to make a tunnel.

Long feathers. Baby floor environment things (those little quilts with a structure and soft toy hanging down), covered with a little sheet or something, to make a hiding place, and a place to pull feathers by. A string pulled under a rug.

8. A Chance to Go Out Confining a cat indoors is like baring a kid from Anaheim the chance to see Disneyland. Yeah, the vets all say your cat will live longer if he or she is confined to indoors. There is much more to life than living long . . . for you AND your cat. The quality of life ought to matter more, don't you think? Let your kitty out to hunt and explore. Cats absolutely love it and it does wonders for their dispositions. Even if in a fenced area. Fresh air ... grass & something new will keep your cat happy. You can also leash train them & take them on a walk or park outing. This all keeps them stimulated.

9. A Little Nature on TV Set the TV to Nature channel where symphonies of natural sounds orchestrate throughout the night. They love it.

10. Hide their Favorite Treats When you have to leave the cats alone for a substantial amount of time, hide their favorite treats around the house (under chairs, on ledges, etc.) This way they will keep finding surprises while you're gone, keeping them happy and preventing boredom!

For those hot summer days, make beef or chicken stock ice cubes! Even fruit juice ice cubes are a favorite with them. (Note: Put these in a bowl, or feed outside, as they can be messy!)

Travel By Air

Many airlines will not ship animals during summer months due to dangers caused by hot weather. Some will only allow dogs to fly in the early morning or in the evening. Check with your airlines for specific rules.

If you do ship a dog, put icepacks or an ice blanket in the dog's crate. (Two-liter soft drink bottles filled with water and frozen work well.) Provide a container of fresh water, as well as a container of frozen water that will thaw over the course of the trip.

By Car

Keep your dog cool in the car by putting icepacks in his crate. Make sure the crate is well ventilated.

Put a sunshade on your car windows.

Bring along fresh water and a bowl, and a tarp or tent so you can set up a shady spot when you stop. Keep a spray bottle filled with water to spritz on your dog to cool him down.

By RV - A dog's safety should not depend on the air conditioning and generator systems in an RV or motor home. These devices can malfunction, with tragic results.If you leave your dog in an RV with the generator running, check it often or have a neighbor monitor it. Some manufacturers have devices that will notify you if the generator should malfunction.

Never leave an RV or motor home completely shut up, even if the generator and AC are running. Crack a window or door or run the exhaust fan.Never, ever leave a dog unattended in a vehicle in the summer months. Heatstroke and death can occur within minutes in warm temperatures.

Make sure your dog has a shady spot to rest in and plenty of fresh water.

Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin, can sunburn. Limit your dog's exposure during the day and apply sunblock to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside.

Check with a lifeguard for daily water conditions.

Dogs are easy targets for sea lice and jellyfish.

Running on the sand is strenuous exercise. A dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament, so keep a check on your dog's activity.

Do not let your dog drink seawater; the salt will make him sick.

Salt and other minerals in ocean water can damage your dog's coat, so rinse him off at the end of the day.

Not all beaches permit dogs; check local ordinances before heading out.

Water Safety

Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim, and others may hate the water. Be conscious of your dog's preferences and skills before trying to make him swim.

If you're swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water and coax him in by calling his name. Encourage him with toys or treats. Or, let him follow another experienced dog he is friendly with.

Never throw your dog into the water.

If your dog begins to paddle with his front legs, lift his hind legs and help him float. He should quickly catch on and keep his back end up.Don't let your dog overdo it; swimming is very hard work and he may tire quickly.If swimming at the ocean, be careful of strong tides.

If you have your own pool, make sure your dog knows where the stairs or ladder are located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers and drown.Never leave your dog unattended in water.

Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable, and it poses special risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the temperature rises, and follow our tips to keep your dog cool.

Heat Hazards

If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child's wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in.

Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water.

Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun's heat is less intense.Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog's paws.

Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Japanese Chins, and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. Keep your brachycephalic dog inside with air-conditioning.

How to Remove Pet Stains

If house training your puppy is going a bit slow or your cat keeps missing the litter box, you don't always have to live with their pungent reminders. These unpleasant stains can be removed, especially if you catch them when they're still fresh.

Urine on carpet and upholstery
Soak up excess moisture with a white rag or paper towels.

Blot on a solution of 1/4 tsp. mild liquid laundry detergent and 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) warm water. Repeat until there is no more stain transferring to a towel or rag.

Blot with a solution of 2 tbsp. ammonia and 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) water. Rinse with warm water. Repeat. Blot dry.

Blot the area with a solution of 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) white vinegar and 2 cups (16 fl oz/500 ml) water. Rinse.

Cover with several layers of paper towels weighed down with a heavy, nonfading object. Continue changing paper towels until the carpet is dry.

If you can't remove the stain, consider recovering the furniture item or replacing the carpet.

Feces on carpet and upholstery
Gently scoop up excess with a spoon or spatula.

Blot with an ammonia solution (see step 3, above). Let it soak in for several minutes.

Blot, then repeat until the stain is removed. Rinse with cold water. Blot dry.

To remove lingering carpet odors, sprinkle baking soda on the spot. Let it sit overnight, then vacuum

Making homemade treats for your pet can be beneficial with natural ingredients but there are alot of recipes out there (& KITS from places like petsmart or petco) that has ingrediants that can cause vomiting... diarhea ... even death!

Here are some things to avoid!

Chocolate... Hopefully this is well-known, but NEVER give an animal chocolate. It's the most dangerous human food for an animal to ingest and can lead to death.

Sugar ... I was in PetSmart yesterday and noticed that most of the mixes to make your own pet treats contained sugar. It's extremely important to never give your pet sugar. There are some animals who benefit and even require sugar, but dogs and cats should never ever have sugar. Short-term, the sugar can make them sick and cause diarrhea and vomitting. Long-term, dogs and cats develop diabetes much easier than humans.

Milk is another thing that needs to be avoided with animals. Even though it might be tempting to give your cat a dish of milk, the lactose can cause horrible diarrhea. There are several different companies that make lactose-free "milk" specifically formulated for cats and kittens. Most of them contain vitamins, too.

Grapes are toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Therefore, raisins are even more dangerous, since a dog could conceivably eat more in a shorter period! Grapes and Raisins can cause kidney failure

Onions & fresh garlic are also poinsonous to dogs.

Nutmeg can cause seizures, nerve damage and death

Macadamia nuts are toxic -Dogs develop weakness, depression, vomiting, difficulty walking, tremors, abdominal pain, lameness, stiffness and/or pale gums. The signs usually dissipate in 12 to 24 hrs. However it can kill smaller dogs and cats.

Coffee and Coffee beans can cause caffine toxcicity

Mushrooms are toxic to pets

Salts are also bad... this includes onion salt & garlic salt. Small amounts of granulated or poder is OK

WHAT IS UP WITH PAYING $20,000 FOR A CAT THAT MATCHES YOUR OUTFIT!!!!

Breeders are taking the plain old domestic cat and cross breeding the animal with an Asian Leopard or even a Jungle cat! These are the Hybrids that are going for a very hefty price tag anywhere from a few hundred dollars to around $20,000.00!

I have a BIG problem with Hybrids & Designer pets! I see most as MUTANTS!

Because most of these animals are not registered, a question could be raised as to how the pets are being treated during the breeding and pregnancy stage. If a so called 'Back Room Breeder' is just in it for the buck, some of these animals may be in danger or at an increased risk for developing health problems, especially during their pregnancy and delivery stages.

Truly it is hard to believe that most of these designer kitties will be loved and cared for as much as a farm cat or stray from the local humane society. Not to mention there are thousands of felines out there at the moment who need homes and also need to be spayed and neutered with adequate medical attention.None the less, as with designer dogs, designer cats are the newest up and coming trend in the lifestyles of the wannabe chic and fabulous. Before we know it Paris and Brit will be toting around a darling little tigress instead of their yappy little pooches.

Found the BEST dog food. Natural Way

I have been feeding my dog (Baxter) this food for quite a while. It is called Lassie Natural Way.

It is a dry food. Baxter is an 11 yr old LongHair Dachshund. When I take him in to get a check up... they think he is maybe 4 or 5 yrs old.

I have had to feed him "emergency food" (quick cheaper bag when I could not find Natural way)

& I notice that he does not eat it very fast... he's droopy, not very energetic & looked fatter. I get him back on Natural Way & he's back out chasing squirrels & running circles in the house.

This has all Natural Ingred.... high protein & only Natural preservatives. NO animal by-products, wheat, corn or soy.

I suggest finding this food. I can only find it in a couple of our Kroger Grocery stores. None of the Pet places carry it (ours anyway)

A quick story..... We were dog sitting for our neighbor's Overweight Lazy Chihuahua for a week.

They sent over Purina chow & she would not touch it & ate all of Baxter's food.

By the end of the week, she was running & playing with baxter. She even jumped up on the bed.

Now at the beginning, I had to lift her up.

snopes.com: Pimple Ball Dog Toy Warning

On Sunday, June 22, 2008 my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws Inc, produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell. (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 045663202279)

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening.

I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth.. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

Chai was taken to the Animal Medical Center (an emergency care facility in New York City) and was treated by Dr. Nicole Spurlock to have the ball remo ved. Because the size of the opening on the ball was so small, all circulation to his tongue was cut off. The doctors had to sedate him in ord er to remove it. Once the ball was removed, his tongue swelled to the point that he could no longer put it in his mouth. Chai was sent home with care instructions and to be observed overnight for any changes. By the following morning Chais tongue had swollen even more. He was taken to his regular vet, Dr.Timnah Lee, for treatment. He was admitted and kept sedated for a period of three days during which time they were treating his wounds and waiting to determine how much of his tongue could be saved.

On June 26, 2008 Chai had his tongue amputated. He was kept in after-care for an additional three days. On Sunday June 29th I brought Chai home from the vet with a barrage of home care instructions, to last for an additional 7 days. His next visit was to have his mouth re-examined and have the feeding tube in his neck removed.

On the way home from the vet we stopped at Petland Discount where I purchased their product to speak to the manager on duty. Upon meeting Chai and seeing his condition, he removed all of the balls in question from the shelves. He also gave me the customer service number to their corporate headquarters to request that they refuse to continue purchasing all Four Paws products, but I have not called them as of yet.

Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bull dog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not without tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

To date, my veterinary bills total over $5000.00 and I will have regular follow up appointments for some time. Additionally, Chai now requires a much more expensive form of food because of this injury, averaging approximately $200 per month.

Also - I am Chai's sole caretaker and the regime required to care for him following his surgery has forced me to lose a great deal of business. I am a hair stylist and my salon is in my home. Given that Chai needs constant attention, and given that he has been wailing in pain, I have not been able to see clients. Additionally, I now have to re-teach my dog to eat, drink and adjust to life without his tongue. Just walking him requires about 30 min twice a day and we only make it three blocks. Feeding him takes me about 90 minutes twice a day and for at least this first week he is not to be unattended for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I sent this information along with the reference to Petunia the french bulldog to Four Paws Inc, and it is their position that there just aren't enough instances to do anything about this. I told their Insurance company's case manager that was not a good enough excuse, It was inferred that my dogs value wasn't much and that his pain and suffering don't count as he is just a piece of property.

Dogs can't sweat without their tongue much less eat or drink normally - very sad story!!
I cannot imagine putting the dog through that, or how in the world he could drink. What a cruel thing to happen to a joyful dog, just playing with a beloved chew-ball, & then to be maimed forever.

Cold Weather Protection for Pets

Following are timely tips to protect pets in cold weather.

Before, during and after walks and outdoor exercise:
* Coats and booties can help your dog stay warm. In particular, short-haired or elderly dogs benefit from wearing a coat or sweater. Look for coats or sweaters with high collars or a turtleneck that covers the dog from the base of the tail on top to the belly underneath. Even lighter t-shirt type coats will help.

* Remember to be very careful with sick or older dogs, since they are more sensitive to cold weather. For any dog sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

* Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If necessary, papertrain your puppy inside if he appears to be sensitive to the weather.

* Clip the fur between toe pads to reduce the amount of snow that collects between toes.

* To help protect dry, sensitive paws, try coating them with a bit of cooking spray before walks in very cold weather.

* During deep snows, shovel out a potty spot for your dog.

* Upon returning home, wipe snow and ice off your dog's feet, legs and belly. Little ice cubes can form in the sensitive spaces between the toes and toe-pads. Remove the ice carefully with your fingers since it may cling to the hairs between the paws. Wiping off your dog will remove any salt, antifreeze or other harmful chemicals that she could ingest them when licking her paws.

* Consider keeping a container of warm water and cloths by the door for use after walks. It is good to rinse the paws before you wipe them dry, because lime rock salt and calcium chloride salt can irritate the foot pads and cause vomiting and diarrhea when licked. Dunking in the water will also dissolve ice and remove mud.

* Many de-icing and ice-melting products are toxic. Read the labels of any projects you use, and store these products in tight containers.

* Even brief exposure to sub-zero temperatures can lead to frostbite of the feet, nose or ears. Frost-bitten skin appears red, gray or whitish and may peel off. Prevent frostbite by removing ice and snow from paws and fur right away. If you suspect frostbite, take your pet to a warm place and thaw out frostbitten areas slowly by applying warm, moist towels. Change them frequently. Continue until the affected areas become flushed. Then contact a veterinarian for further care.

* Do not be tempted to let dogs off leash in snow or ice. Canines often lose their scent in cold weather and can become lost. Dogs also can panic in snow storms and run away. The decreased daylight does not help either. More dogs are reported lost during the winter than any other season, so always keep dogs on leash when outside a fully fenced yard and make sure yours always wears proper identification.

Winter pet care:
* Brush your dog vigorously and regularly. The air in most houses becomes dry during the colder months, which depletes moisture from dog skin and fur. Brushing improves skin, coat and circulation.

* A thick-coated dog typically needs grooming in cold weather. The fur can get wet and matted, making it an irritant. Clean fur lofts and holds air in a manner similar to layering clothes, thus helping the animal stay warm.

* Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter. Leave the coat longer for more warmth. When you bathe your dog, completely dry him before taking him out for a walk.

* Use fatty acid supplements during the winter, ideally starting several weeks before cold weather sets in, to help skin and coat.

* If your dog engages in a lot of outdoor activities, increase his food supply to help keep his coat thick and healthy.

Safety measures:
* Do not leave antifreeze, coolant or windshield wiper fluid within reach. And do not let pets drink from puddles. These products taste appealing to pets but most are lethal to animals when ingested. So thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle. Also, keep your pets on leash outdoors and steer them far away from any suspect puddles.
Consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Some companies offer non-toxic antifreeze products, such as Sierra. Be sure to have your radiator flushed before you fill it with Sierra and do not mix Sierra with traditional antifreeze.

* Keep a winter survival kit in your car. Include blankets, towels, water, bowl, first aid kit, and a sign that dog is in the car.

* Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold. The animal can freeze to death. Of course, do not leave animals, or children, in cars during very warm weather either.

* Cats left outdoors and wild animals sometimes climb onto car engines or beneath cars to seek warmth. Please bang on the hood of your care honk the horn before starting the engine to warn cats away.

In-home health and safety:
* Provide your companion animal with a warm place to sleep, away from drafts and off the floor. Dog and cat beds with a warm blanket or pillow are especially cozy.

* If you know people who keep dogs in basements or tiled rooms, remind them that tile and uncarpeted areas can get very cold.

* The dryness in our homes can make animals more susceptible to problems such as dry noses, upper respiratory infections, dandruff, itchy skin, hair texture changes, dry throats and more. Some tips:
Use a humidifier. Consider a model that humidies and purifies the air.
Add skin conditioners to the diet. Get them from internet and other merchants who sell quality health products.
Spray or wipe the pet's coat with water with a few drops of Rescue Remedy or Green Hope Farms Healthy Coat before beginning grooming.

* Portable heaters and fireplaces can be deadly hazards for animals and children. Screen fireplaces and put portable heaters out of their reach. Do not run portable heaters when you are not there to monitor them; each year, a number of house fires start this way.

Emergencies:
* To avoid injuries, hypothermia and drowning, don't let dogs or kids venture onto frozen ponds.

* If your dog falls through ice into water, heed this guidance about drowning from Dr. Stefanie Schwartz, Dog Fancy writer and author of First Aid for Dogs:
If the dog is limp, unconscious or unresponsive, wrap him in a towel. Keep the neck and back immobilized to avoid aggravation of possible spinal injury. Place the dog on a flat board for transporting.
If the dog is not breathing, lay her on flat on his right side. Make several quick compressions to his chest to expel water, then feel for a heartbeat just behind the left elbow. If there's a heartbeat, but the dog is still not breathing, check the back of his throat for obstructions.
If you feel no obstruction, close the dog's muzzle by firmly encircling it with your hand. Put the dog's tongue in his mouth first so he doesn't bite it. Then, blow into his nose. Adjust the force of your breath to the size of dog. Watch for rise of his chest, and keep checking for a heartbeat.
If you can't feel a heartbeat, make one or two quick firm compressions on the chest wall with both of your palms flat on top of each other, and begin artificial respiration. Blow about 15 breaths followed by a chest compression. Continue until the dog regains consciousness, respiration and heartbeat return, or until emergency assistance takes over.

* Keep Rescue Remedy on hand. It's a Bach flower essence available in most health food stores. This gentle, natural stress reducing liquid can help people and animals recover from injury, fright, illness, travel fatigue and irritation. Put a drop drinking water. To help prevent travel sickness, a common dosage is four drops in the mouth about ten hours before the trip, repeating every four hours as needed. For stressed or injured animals, rub a drop on their ear or put a drop on the towel in their crate or carrier.

* If you see an animal in distress, please call your local humane society right away. It doesn't take long for companion animals to suffer and fall victim to severe winter weather. Frostbite occurs when the fluids in tissues freeze, frequently on the tips of the ears, paws or pads, flanks and belly. Hypothermia, which can lead to death, occurs when the animal's body temperature drops significantly below normal, causing the bodily systems to shut down. Furthermore, pets left outside are deprived of water, since water freezes at 32 degrees.

Leaving pets outdoors:
* If you know anyone who keeps pets outdoors, persuade them to bring them inside. Low temperatures, winds and precipitation can lead to illness and death. In addition, water bowls freeze in cold weather.

* Remember, dogs are domesticated animals who should live indoors with their people. Living outside in a dog house is a sad life, especially in cold, hot and wet weather.

* Please keep cats inside. Felines who spend time outside can freeze, or get lost or injured.

* Dog houses and the law: Local laws typically require that if dogs are kept outdoors, the owner must supply the dog with "proper" shelter from the weather, which includes a dog house big enough to stand up in and to permit posture positions that allow the dog to stretch out and stand up, but must not be oversized, since the dog needs to retain body heat; a wind flap on the dog house door; nonporous bedding such as straw; and, access to fresh, unfrozen water.

* If you see a dog in need of a caring friend, become that dog's advocate. Speak with the owner, and if that fails to improve the situation, contact your local SPCA, humane society of animal control office.

Cookies for Fluffy (the kitty) recipe

1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup soy flour
1 teaspoon catnip
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons wheat germ
1/3 cup powdered milk
1 tablespoon unsulphured molasses
2 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil
Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
Mix dry ingredients together. Add molasses, egg, oil and milk. Roll out flat onto oiled cookie sheet and cut into small, cat bite-size pieces. Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool and store in tightly sealed container.

TIPS FOR PHOTGRAPHING YOUR PETS

1. Use Natural Light
If possible always use natural light when taking your pet in picture. Avoid flash, as flash burst can, not only cause red-eye, but also frighten the animal. Instead try to go outside or, if it is not possible, in a room well lit by a large window.

2. Keep the Eyes Sharp
Having sharp eyes is important in any kind of portraits photography. As they say, “Eyes are the Window to the Soul” and pets eye can be very expressive. So make sure to focus on your pet’s eyes and keep the tack sharp

3. Go to Them
It is very important that your pet feels comfortable and at ease, so instead of forcing him to come to you go to him. Most important is to get down to his level; We all know how a dog looks when viewed from above, this is the way we always see them. Show us the way they see world! Sit on the floor or lie on your belly and remember to shoot from HIS eye level or below.

4. Give Value to their Character
You know your pet better than anyone else, and a successful picture is one that conveys the character of its subject. If you have a lazy cat show him yawning, if your animal is of a playful type show him in action performing his favorite trick.

5. Go Macro
Put on that long lens and fill the frame with your pet’s face and fur, close up shots often make beautiful animal portrait.

6. Surprise Them
One of the most difficult things is to let your pet hold still. An easy trick is to let him play quietly and once you have everything ready, let someone call for him or whistle. This will surprise him and catch his attention and you will have a few seconds to capture him in a nice and alert posture

7. Schedule your Session
If you are longing for a formal pet portrait shot, try to schedule the photo session when you’re animal is somewhat sleepy or has just woke up it will be much easier to keep him still then. If you want a more dynamic shot then pick up a time when your pet is energetic. If he is sick it is better to just postpone it for another day.

8. Be Patient
Pet photography requires a lot of patience. No matter how excited your furry friend is, if you are patient enough, he will end up by relaxing and you will have the opportunity to get a decent shot.

9. Experiment
Take your time and enjoy the session, try different approaches, angles and compositions. Shoot a lot you will have time to worry about the results later.

PET TIPS #6

Dog urination burns your lawn? Try giving them some tomato juice every day (either in a bowl or on their food) and it should solve the problem.

After soaking up the majority of urine or picking up the poop baby wipes do a great job and pick up all smells with no stains left behind.

I have a dog who loved to dig. When I'd fill the hole and re-seed, he'd just dig it up again. One day I was watching him wander around the yard, and I noticed he took extra care not to step in his droppings. So, the next time I filled up a hole, I buried a little dung under, and left some dung on top. He avoided the freshly-seeded grass, and his droppings made excellent fertilizer. This won't work for all dogs... I also have another dog who loves to dig. This trick does not work on her, as she does not care where she steps.

Please Note: the feces of dogs or any other meat-eating animal are NOT SAFE to use as fertilizer on plants that will be eaten by people, such as veggies, fruits, or herbs. The feces can spread disease, even if it comes from a healthy dog.

Is your dog digging? Try putting cayenne pepper in the holes - they don't like the sensation when they go back to dig again.

For teething puppies mix chicken or beef broth (look for low fat, low sodium brands) with 1 ½ cup of water. Pour them into ice cube trays to made broth ice cubes. They are tasty treats on hot days. (be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill. I have heard of small dogs getting too cold too quickly when chewing on ice.)

Do not leave your pet in an area with dangling phone cords, drape cords or other items that they may strangle on. Be aware of electric cords that may be chewed by the pet.

To keep your dog busy, buy toys with little holes in them (such as a Kong), put both big and small pieces of kibble in the toy and give it to your dog. This will keep him busy for quite awhile presuming he has a few small ones that he gets out quickly. You can also wedge dog biscuits in the holes with a smear of peanut butter.

When your dog is teething, instead of have him chewing on couches, walls etc. Buy a few (cheap) wash clothes. Soak the wash cloth and put it ion the freezer. When fully frozen give it to the dog to chew, it will thaw out so have another one ready in the freezer. (be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill. If your dog runs away from you and you finally catch up to it, no matter how angry you are at the dog, do not yell or smack it or your dog will never come to you when called for fear of being punished.

Do not leave your dog unattended on a choke chain. The chain could get caught and strangle the dog.

Do not leave your dog in the car unattended on hot days. Even with the windows open, temperatures in cars WILL reach deadly levels. It only takes 5 minutes!

Using metal water dishes outside in winter may be a risk, because your pet's tongue could stick to the frozen metal. In the summer medal bowls can get very hot, and burn your dog.

If you have a puppy that pees on your carpet. After soaking up most of the mess with paper towel, sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbontae of soda (baking soda) over the area and leave it to absorb both the traces of urine and the odor.

A new puppy will often whine because he misses his mother. Wrap a towel around a warm hot water bottle and place it in his bed. A ticking clock or a radio playing softly will also help.

To help keep your puppy from chewing on the carpet and furniture, be sure he has his own rubber toys. On furniture (table, chair legs, etc.) that he is chewing on, try putting a little oil of cloves on the wood. The odor should keep him away, if not, the bitter taste will.

For a new litter of puppies, confine them in a mesh playpen. With a wooden playpen with wooden slats, tape screen around the pen so they won't get out. Children's plastic pools are great for new puppies. The pool can be rinsed out to rid odors or messes.

Frozen Peanut Butter Yogurt Treats

Plain Yogurt (No sugar or fruit added) is great for Dog Digestive Tract.

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe Frozen Peanut Butter Yogurt Treats

1-32oz. container of yogurt
1/4 cup of peanut butter... (creamy)
1. Put the peanut butter in a microwave safe dish and microwave until melted.
2. Mix the yogurt and the melted peanut butter in a bowl.
3. Pour mixture into cupcake papers and freeze. OR spray mini muffin tins with a little PAM & after freezing... Pop out & keep in ziplocks. Smaller cool treats.
